This journey is for those who don't mind several days of long winding drives along high mountain roads. The "Lateral Route", as it is known in Bhutan, takes us from the western valleys of Paro and Thimphu to Trashigang, the easternmost region in the kingdom. Along the way are spectacular waterfalls that cascade down to the highway, some of the highest motorable passes in the world, villages where Bhutan's best weavers continue the rich textile tradition, a dramatic mountaintop temple that is the home of one of Bhutan's famed mask dances, and the opportunity to meet people from three of Bhutan's four ethnic groups. The cons: until political tensions subside in the Indian state of Assam, which provided a convenient exit route, we have to retrace our journey back to West Bhutan for your return flight). Please contact us for details.
